Evaluation question 4.
How did you use new media techonologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?
RESEARCH AND PLANNING.
- I used www.youtube.com to research music videos of all genres and also refered back to them during the planning to make sure we followed to genre but not copy.
- From earlier posts you can see that i have used this website http://microsites.nme.com/php/mediapack/pdf/nme_media_information_full.pdf to find out details about how much it would cost to advertise bvut to also find out facts and statistics on NME's audience so that we knew who would see our product advertised and if it was our target audience.
- Tripod was used to steady the video camera to make sure our shots looked neat.
- Video camera - to film our video and fillers incase we needed them.
- Digital Camera - we used the digital camera to show that we had all used the equipment given and for our stil images for our ancillary tasks.
- We used photoshop to edit our CD covers and Adverts.
- We used IMovieHD to lip sync and edit our footage we where using in our final video production.
- we used www.dafont.com to download fonts for our ancillary tasks.
- Something which was very new to me was www.prezi.com this is a website inwhich you write things and uplaod things then click and zoom, once i got the hang of it it wasnt really hard and the end product was neat. we used this for our evaluation.
Here you can see we all used the Camera and tripod, we also used a digital camera to take these images and our stills for our ancillary tasks.
Evaluation Question 3.

Together we planned our individual CD covers and Magazine Adverts to make sure there was something consistant so that they where all recognised for the same reasons. Each CD cover features a different of the 3 main characters focused on in our video. we turned the images black and white and then turned the saturation down so that the covers had a hint of colour and turned up the hue on an item of clothing that each of the characters where wearing for example; In mine Shiela was wearing a bring pink coat and tights therefore when i did so they would stand out. I also edited the contrast and made the photo darker so it gave it dirtier feel.
The editing that we used in the video matches the editing we did on the covers, such as the contrast is dark and made to look a bit dirty and grimey in both to make it consistant. They not only match the video but the genre aswell.
we found out from http://microsites.nme.com/php/mediapack/pdf/nme_media_information_full.pdf
that;
if we were to advertise our music video in a magazine it would be NME magazine this is because the audience that read their magazine

therefore NME would be the ideal magazine to advertise our product as we have the same audience, and this would hopefully gain us more fans and good reputation.
The weakness of advertising in NME magazine is that people that maybe cant afford or like reading the magazine but might like our song wouldnt know.
These are the types of front covers NME have had that would attract our audience ;

Our ancillary texts and main product are very effective at reaching the target audienc,e however it doesn't reach out to attract a new audience which if it did would make it much easier to sell the product.
we discussed pricing of our Cd/Dvd and decided on pricing it at £2.99 as both a download and to buy. we thought by releasing it as a download we were possibly expanding our audience as more people use modern technology and download nowadays. As mentioned before we said we would have a quarter page advert. We searched music adverts online and found a few examples that we had based our idea on.fgfggg
These advertisements from NME are a quatre of an a4 page, we chose to do it this size bacuse it would be cost effective as its not going to cost as much as a double page spread, also Jamie T is already a popular artist therefore we dont have to hype him, only the video. we liked the colours and the layout for the second advertisement for 'Disturbia Clothing' as it would catch the readers attention striaght away.
i found this link http://microsites.nme.com/php/mediapack/pdf/nme_media_information_full.pdf to find out about rates for an advertisement in NME, i found out that for a quatre of an A4 page (4 columns - 127 mm) it would cost £1,120 for one single colour advertisemtent.
we measured both our advert and CD covers to ensure they where the correct size and so we new what we had to work with.
We decided that our Music video will be premiered on MTV 2, which is an Indie/Alternative music television channel, at 9pm on a Thursday night; we believe this would be the best time to attract an audience as Thursdays night people are bound to be at home and regular television soaps will have finished so we may gain some advertisement there.
We feel the consumer would gain with our product because it is not only a Cd but the music video has been included. Not only that but both the song and the music video are being sold as a package for £2.99.
Evaluatin Question 2.

"Told their story clearly, but possibly could have benefited from some more creative images."
"There is a good natural feel to the characters, they're very true to 'music video' characters. The ending is particularly good. A real music video feel, could have been the real thing."
" Story was simple but effective. Some of the camera/editing effects were a little distracting, sometimes less is more. The opening and closing titles were 'top class'. The colour accent didn't quite work probably due to the over cast lighting and it didn't work in the videos favour. The cars in the background distracted, a better location could have been selected. Cant they find a park bench like normal alcoholics??!!"
Above is our feedback from people for our production work.
I have learned from the audience feedback that although feedb ack is mainly down to personal preference that our location could have been in more than one place the reason we filmed where we did was because there was no disruption unlike our first location which was busy with cars and noises.
we learnt that some of our shots werent as steady as they could have been, this is something we could have taken more care with and do so if we were to do the process again. we have to work on our framing, as sometimes peoples heads where cut off.
we could have picked a better mes - en - scene for different parts of the song and video.

Evalutation Question 1.
1. In what ways does your media product use, develope or challenge forms and conventions of real media texts?
As you will notice from earlier blog posts we first chose the music vidoe 'Here in your arms' - 'HelloGoodbye', we had done plenty of planning and research into the video, artists and song, then when it came to filming nothing was going as we had planned, the weather was never right, actors let us down and our plan wasnt as easy as we thought it would be, so we went back to the drawing board and came to a group desicion that we would re-plan 'Sheila' - 'Jamie T'.
I would class Jamie T's music as Indie/Alternative with some rap. This genre appealed to us straight away, not only do we like this genre of music and have more knowledge on it than other genres we thought it would be easier to base a story around, which is what we was aiming for.
we went through many music videos via www.youtube.com of the same and different genres to compare the first one we looked at was http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N64QMKEbJQg this is Arctic Monkeys - “Florescent Adolescent”. The second was http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA15L6cHPvQ and this is “When the Sun Goes Down” - Arctic Monkeys, these videos where both the same genre as Sheila - Jamie T there for we could see what they both involved and included and decide wether we wanted them in ours. 'When the sun goes down' has a social realism aspect to the video as well as ours does and also they use an authentic location which we did too.
For the 3rd video we looked at a different genre this is Heavy Metal; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wws7mnMewPw this is Psychosocial by Slipknot, the song doesnt interest us, its just screams, and jumping around, we couldnt base a story around it and would be very hard to make a video to.
Then finally another video we watched was http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M11SvDtPBhA - 'Party in the USA' - Mylie Cyrus the genre is pop/RnB we feel it has been glossed over, it is light hearted and doesnt address any issues or problems like ours does. To make a video glossy and extravagant i think we would of needed more time and equipment too.
This is another song by the same artist Jamie T called “If you’ve Got the Money”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DLo54YDNek
This is the original music video for “Sheila” by Jamie T:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-L7Cadb-c0
Our video was different to Jamie T's version because we had a completely different location, his was set in the centre of london, and ours was set down a cycle track near a river. We had a different story line, his was based around one character who lip synced pretty much the whole song. And this one man tells the whole story, where as ours follows the other characters such as 'Jack' and 'Gegorgina'.
There where also some similarities to Jamie T's video and ours such as; We both have a narrator for the majority of the video. We both have minimal props, its a simple story, easy to follow. We have both based a story around characters.
I think we used many conventions of real media texts as after researching real media texts and realising they where simple straight to the point story based around the characters we developed on that and had not just one character but 3 mentioned in the story and used them as our main focus.
We have stayed with the same genre and feel to the video but the we challenged the forms and conventions of real media texts by having a completely different location, having a different story line all together. I believe as we didnt copy anything anyone else has done but we have researched other peoples work for ideas, we have developed on their ideas but challenged them by changing them to us and our audience tastes.

Finished.
We have finished our Music video and our Ancillary tasks completely now, as you can see i have uplaoded my Cd cover and my magazine advert, but not the music video, this is because after we had burnt it onto our CD we had to put it on our memory sticks to upload at home, and then it told us we needed to change the file to a different type, as we gave in our video to our teacher on the CD we have no way of uplaofding it until after the weekend. On the upside, we are finished. And i am very proud of me, my group and all our hard work.

Editing
we began to edit our upload and edit out film, we began to realise that it was hard for all of us to edit at one time, so we decided as long as we where all there together helping with ideas that it didnt matter as much on who had the laptop the most. so when some of us where getting on with editing the other people where doing their ancillary tasks and so on. having new software was all a bit daunting at first but once we got using it it became very easy and we carried on using it.
here is some images of us editing our music video together;

Filiming.
ok so today we went out and decided we wanted to get the majority of our filming done this night as we would like to get on with out filming and ancillary tasks. so we went to our location and we did exactly that we filmed pretty much all we had to, we only had to make one more visit to film some extra bits we wanted to add in. Whoever was free did some filming to make it equal, (images yet to uplaod, coming soon).
Location, Props etc...
Ok so after going to tanas house and filming some footage in her house and in the surrounding streets, didnt go brilliantly, i mean we got footage but we didn't really have a proper plan written down, this is when the plan ( with the lyrics is planned out line by line in previous post) came into action. We decided as a group that the costumes should be changed for the characters as they where to dressed up and we wanted to dress down our video. The costumes are now as follows :
Sheila - April: Timberland sand colour boots, bright pink tights, denim mini skirt, Vest top and bringht pink puffa jacket, hair worn in a bun to one side, big hoop earings and alot of eye make up and over the top make up.
Georgina - Tana:(Overdose due to dads death) plain boots, jeans, top, body warmer, no make up except dark circles around eyes, hair pulled tight off face.
Jack/Narrator - Luke: as Narrator/Singer - indie look, checked top, hair to the side, plimpsoles and trousers. - as Jack: hoodie, a bit more rough looking with trousers/jeans and plimpsoles.
We found a location with a river, underpass, and a cycle track surrounded by trees, we shot most of our footage down there as it went so wel with our lyrics and our Mes-en-scene.
our props consisted of: a can of stella, a baby(doll), Drugs (in bag for deal), drugs ( tablets) and bottle of jack daniels for overdose.

Filming. BIG problem!...
Ok so today we went out with the camera to start our filming. BIG PROLAMO! we went out to film our video, or the begining at least and we was getting no where we couldnt get any footage we liked, and the song really wasnt working with anything we had planned. the shots where all going wrong. Funnily enough we was coming back from filming to go and research of another song, we was in the car and Jamie T - Sheila came on and me and my media group where all singing and had all these ideas about 'What if' we did this and 'What if' we could do this, so instead of saying what if, we put out plan in action and went back to planning for this song.
This is an image of the artist Jamie T

This is his album cover off the album Panic Prevention which is where the song Shiela is.

As you can see it is very busy and not focused on any one thing which is where i think we will probably change things when it comes to our CD covers but we will deal with that when we come to it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_urZJ6Eykc
above is the link to Jamie T's Video, however this is not his album version but we prefered this version as it was a little shorter and would suit our ideas better.
So these are all the lyrics that we planned out before we filmed -

Personal Identity Lessons
We have been learning about personal identity for our exam and how people can create a personal identity of themselves whether it be true or not. we looked at facebook alot and how people are stereotyped into being a type of person by how they type, or what they write about themselves. how often people are stereotyped is by what they wear, they are creating an image about themselves that gives others an impression. we spoke about social networking sites in detail and we learnt about how a social networking site works. We had a discussoin about Personal identity and went into detail about how people can be who ever they want to be through a social networking site/dating site or similar things as they have a barrier, people do this to 'fit in' or to 'stand out' people care so mnuch about their image and what people think about them that often there is a very big difference between the photos on someones homepage to what they look like in real life.
through social networking sites people can be whoever they want to be with out any one knowing, in a way i supose it offers a form of escapism for people. Like when you join the army, they shave your hair and you no longer have a name, just a number, and in the police force sometimes, you can loose your identity and be who you want to be.
People are often misled by social networking sites as people always take what they see as the first impression of someone and automatically brand them as a label or a 'type' of person.
A lot of media theorists such as Claude Strauss believe that new media such as the web is creating a different world where anyone can be invited into your lives. as the internet is updated so often it is so easy for people to find out current infomation on other people. it is so easy for people to create an identity of themselves as it is a blank canvas and you can change anything you dont like about yourself, as we all know in some situations this can be dangerous when people lie about who they really are.
As more and more people get internet phones they can get infomation even quicker than they could with just a computer or laptop as they can check what ever they want on the go. Peoples profiles on social networking sites say alot about that person and its that first impression that often sticks in peoples head.
The way in which people choose to present themselves on social networking sites says alot about people such as they way they type for example: if someone was to type a status on facebook like this : ii had Succh A Gd Dayy To0odaii. many people would label that person and they would come across as not very bright as they obviously cant spell/type properly, which is most probably not the case but this is what people will do. rather than if you use long words and type full words and type properly people will think oh that person is really clever when they could actually be getting the infomation and long words off of google.

22nd January 2010
we chose Hellogoodbye - Here in your arms. We have been planning our video.
we planned location, which was to use a friends house to begin with and then the surrounding streets, also outside our school and a shop. we then planned what characters we needed and cast the characters we had a 'Cool guy' (Conor) who is with the 'popular pretty girl'(april) that all the geeks want and a 'geeky boy' (Me) who chases the girl.
The costumes would be along the lines of this - Cool guy - branded clothing, jeans and a nice jacket, groomed hair and facial hair. The Popular Pretty girl - Blonde hair, a lot of make up, short skirt/shorts, lots of pink, nice car. Geeky boy - oversized glasses, bad hair, clothes all tucked in and trousers pulled too high, braces and long white socks.
the basic plan of the video was going to be from the geeky boys point of view and have day dream bubbles of what he was thinking, he would follow the girl and imagine himself with her only we would edit it to be the cool guy with her and the geeky boy is only imagining it.

We looked at a few songs on youtube of music vidoes, professional and amateur but this song stood out to us on you tube, and thought it was a good option because it was a clear song, with lyrics we can make a story to, its called Here in your arms and its by HelloGoodbye.
here is the video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-KQ1tp_qOQ
and here are the lyrics - http://artists.letssingit.com/hellogoodbye-lyrics-here-in-your-arms-sknfc2n
and here is an image of the group 'HelloGoodbye'

as you can see from the image of the group they are quite quirky and different, and the genre of their music i would say is probably Pop, maybe a little rock/alternative.
from the video you can see that is has an easy story to follow and understand this is because the song is clear and the lyrics are simple.

11th January 2010.
My group is me, tana and april, we have decided today that we want to do a music video. we thought it would be the most interesting to do and would also suit us as a group, we believed we worked well in a group and we would get along. we got brain storming on ideas and decided that it would be better to choose a song you could hear the lyrics to clearly, so that we can have a story to it. we also decided we didnt want to lip sync the whole song but that a good video always has some lip syncing. we went on www.youtube.com to look at other music videos to see what was consistant and what was not. we also thought at first we should chose a well known song and then realised that probably wasnt the way to go about it. we realised that it is easier to copy ideas of a song if it is really well known as it is hard to sway away from the idea the original artist already got.
we have to have a promotion pack as well as the video, we all have to do individual CD covers and magazine adverts, they all need to be done seperately but must show consistancy.
we thought about the genre of the song and thought it would be best not to do a rap/r&b song as they are usually fast songs, therefore would be hard to keep a story to the lyrics.
