PSA - RAPE AWARENESS EVALUATION

Overall i think that our PSA deserves a level 3, i think that a level 2 is too low for the work and skills needed to create this video.

we used a point of veiw shot when running, but other than that every shot was held steady when it needed to be. there where no heads cut off so the framing was appropriate. we had to cut and split clips where appropriate. we used many different types of shots such as the following;

- Long Distance
-Close up
- Over the shoulder
- Establishing shot
- popint of veiw and more

the material got the message across taht we wanted, adding music made a better effect on the video too therefore the material is appropriate for the task set.
For Mise - en scene we purposly done our video in daylight so that people can see it doesnt just happen at night it can happen any time of the day. we chose a girl being chased and a man chasing her which is appropriate mise - en - scene

we edited our video by adding in statistics and warnings so that it helps the message get across to the viewer.
we used fade in and fade out, and changing the sound levels so that it was more clear.
we combined images sound and editing to suit the movie and i think we did really well.
planning was a very important part of our work as it helped the filming go more smoothly.

PSA - what i have learnt so far

last week we were put into groups to do our Public Service Announcment videos first we sat down and created a story board of what we would like to incloude in our PSA.

i will post a copy oif my story board on here shortly,
the planning was probably the hardest part like choosing where we was going to shoot the filming as we wanted to do it across a road outside school but it wasnt possible as the cars where always going past! also a member of our group was abcent when planning so when it came to filming we had to go over the whole thing with that person and it took up time, this person wanted to do things different but it was difficult because we had already planned.

using our time sensibly was the most important thing, and communication, before we knew it our time was up, luckily we were able to finish our filming. I think planning is really important so that we could go out and just follow it rather than just filming anything and making it up as we went along.

overalll i think our film went really well as we used a variety of different shots and angles.
we now have to concentrate on our editing to neaten it up. when filming some things had to be changed but overall we followed our story board.

PSA - Public service announcement

we have been asked for our next peice of work to create a PSA which is a type of advertisement for the publics safety. We will be focusing on rape awareness for the public.

The main thing i want to get across in my video is that women shouldnt go out on their own, they shouldnt walk down alleys, talk to people they dont know, get into unknown veichals but in a situation that is very common being aware that Unmarked cabs or taxis are dangerous and that people should be aware of this.

i think that to get the message across especially to young women it needs to be powerful, i dont want to just make women aware but everyone.

facts.

i found this on wikipedia, its a list of the reported rapes.
i found that alot of the time the stories i read where when people where on a night out, it seems that it is more rare that it will happen when a women is in the right state of mind however it still does. Women are attacked when drunk as they are seen as vunerable.

here is a link of David Lynch's PSA on cleaning up new york!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSWv90msTUc
i think this video is very powerful, the noises catch ur attention and it creeps you out so that you watch it and realise how bad it is! i think it has a good impact on people, especially those who dont like rats!!

here is another video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKNCYw2898Q
this video has a slightly different approach its powerful because its upseting and it makes you think!
its about a girl who was raped, she didnt speak up because she was too scared and she commit suicide, its her suicide note, i think it would effect not only women but their families too as they would not like to be the parents on the recieving end of their childs suicide not. its very upsetting but so effective. this video also contains facts about how many people speak up and the effects of not speaking up, i think this helps warn people of the concequences.

although this next video isnt as professsional as the other two it still sends a very important message across, i think the effects used suit the PSA as it is on drugs and some shots are made blurry. i also think that having the seringe there would make people realise actually this is dangerous! here is the link;

What i have learnt so far

in the lesson where the task was set to film a mini film i was absent, however i was there to plan it and the lesson after to view the video and to take part in the editing.
watching my groups video back i have realised how important it is to plan not ony what you are going to film but that Me en scene plays a very big part in the presentation.
when Ashley was being filmed there was a reflection on the filmers in the window, this is something peope would notice, aso that when filming april on the other end of the phone that you could see the desk in the background of where ashley was sitting, you could clearly see that both people wwho where suposed to be in different settings where actually filmed in the same room.
noise actually went really well excdept one part where you could hear the camera man talking, luckiy we found that you can change the volume of what was happening and also put music over the top which we did.

i learnt that the editing side of things isnt as hard as i thought it would be, i had to work things out myself a little bit look around the programme, also my group members where very helpful in telling me what to do as i had never used a Mac before or the software we were using.

i think that for our first short film and the editing after we did pretty well, i think that we used a number of editing skills rather than just one, some are as follows;
cutting shots to the correct time
neatening the video in general
fade in effect atr begining
fade out effect at end
music and begining and end
credits scrolling up screen
title scrollling up screen
changiong the volume and deleteing background noise.
these are the editing techniques i have learnt so far and will continue to learnt more.

Overall from the mark scheme given i thinnk our vidoe deserves a level 2 for achieving the following things;
Holding a shot steady, where appropriate
Framing a shot, Including and excluding elements as appropriate
using a variety of of shot distances as appropriate
shooting material appropriate to the task

but i would say level 1 for mes en scene just for the fact that you can tell its all shot in the same room and that you can see reflections in the window.

A2 Media Work

This year we have an opportunity to use the cameras to film either a Music Video, a Short Film or a Film Trailer. For now we will be focusing on camera work and getting camera angles accurate. To reach Level 4, the top level in this corsework i would have to be able to do the following;

Show Excellence in the following;
- Holding a shot steady, Where appropriate;
- Framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate;
- Using a variety of shot distances as appropriate;
- Shooting material appropriate to the task set;
- Selectinh mise-en-scene including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting;
- editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer;
- using varied shot transitions, captions and other effects selectively and appropriatly.

at the minute i think i am at a level two and i think i will need to work hard and push my self if i want to achieve a Level 4. another thing evident from the first couple of pieces of camera work i did that i need to concentrate on mes-en-scene and really think about what i want in my shot to get the message across. also how hard it is to keep the camera still. making sure the shots arent too long is very important as it will make the video seem alot longer. the positioning of the people on camera at the time is inportant for presentation. Sound is a very big part of the camera work, setting the scene and telling people what your video is about, making sure the sound is clear and there are no unexpected or unwanted noises in the background. Also the person who is talking is talking loud enough, as i found out when filming before that if you are doing a long shot it is hard to hear the person from a long way a way so a voice over would be appropriate there rather than struggling to hear people. making sure there is a variety of diferent shots makes the film interesting and also shows that you have a higher level of understanding of camera work and camera angles.

When we was filimg the tour around the school little details are so important such as making sure clothes are on properly, i was on camera talking and the shoulder of my top fell off and i didnt notice but when we watched our film back it looked really bad. paying close attention to little details is very important. we also cut people head off alot, rather than thinking about what the shot looked like we was thinking of ideas for what we should do for the film. framing the shot properly and making sure the person talking is in the correct place is important for neatness and presentation.

i have yet to decide wether i would like to do the filming in a group or individually.

Learning Process

before starting this media course, i had never used photoshop before so it was completely knew to me. the first time i used it was when we had to get into groups and make a nature magazine, using photoshop. This was to get us used to the programme and prepare us for our coursework.

our group went to the pond and took some images, the image i chose to use was of the pond and a purple bush at the back, with two ducks swimming in the centre 0f the pond and image. we named it duck watch and used the snow blizzard effect to change the picture making the weather look really bad, we used the color scheme of purple and white. This being the first time i had used photoshoph it didnt go as bad as i thought it would. buit then again it was very frustrating, it also took along time to get the hang of so i was pracctising all the time.

we then moved on to our preliminary task which was to produce a school magazine to an age group of our choice, we looked at things like how often would we print them, who to, aswell as what it would look like.
i learnt that i had to use my time alot more wisely as photoshop took alot longer to work out than expected

contents

here is an image of my contents, as you can see i have continued the house stlye, logo. masthead and colour shceme.

last two weeks

over the last two weeks i have been adding things to my magazine, on the front cover, the contents and double page spread, i had chosen a house style using a colour scheme of blue red and white.

in the last two days of the two weeks we had off i was researching magazines that are the same genre as mine and i looked back at mine and decided if i saw that front cover, i wouldnt buy it. As my magazine is aimed at people like myself i decided to re-do the front cover, although all my time and hard work had gone in to making it look how it was before i much prefered the second version. i changed my main colour scheme to red yellow and black with little sections of blue and white to break it up. i tried to keep it more simple rather than just shoving lots of things on to one page like on my first front cover i designed.

on my new front cover i added more colour and aslo a kind of puff about a bands new album;
in actual fact this is my third front cover.

i did this using this tool on photoshop elements;(the image circled)

catch up and priliminary task

as i have had some trouble accessing this website i am going to be writing about what i have done in the last week and a half.

so far i have bveen researching other rock magazines to find out who their target audience is and what they do to attract this audience, also their house style, what is continued throughout the magazine and what colour schemes they use.

with my magazine i have designed a masthead, subtitle, image, caption and barcode, i realise i have a far bit to do, i also want to come up with a logo for my magazine tso that people recognise my magazine better.

with my content, i want to make it bright and colourful as in my priliminary task i just did a table and i dont think it did my work any justice.

here is my preliminary task, front cover;

Monday 2nd March 2009

in lesson we had to look at different aspects of a magazine called 'Hip Hop' straight away i could tell it was a hip hop magazine as there was a lot of black, gold and silver which is what i expected because glamour is associated with this genre of music. the typical look of the people in the magazine were either big muscly men, mean looking with lots of bling and tattoos, most of them wearing hoods or hats (new era), and the women either tarty looking with short dresses and low cut tops, or lots of jewelery ' looking gangster'.
i think the magazine is aimed at teenagers from about 16+ as there was a story about Barack Obama the American president and i don't think anyone of a younger age would want to read about that.
the magazine makes a point of trying to aim there magazine at both males and females, i can tell this because 2 pages back to back on the first page there is an image with a man with no top on, for the girls, and on the page next to it a women with little clothing on for the men.
also there is another 2 page spread with one half presents to buy for the boyfriend and the 2Nd page presents to buy for the girlfriend.
what i didn't expect from the magazine was that the title didn't go with the glamour inside as it was just white plain and boring and also the lead story is a serious one and then you open the magazine and there isn't anything serious in there, its all about the glamorous life of these famous people.
one thing that was expected is that this magazine was very American, the slang was very "American gangster" like.

Then i went on the website VIBE http://www.vibe.com/
this is alto more what i expected, although hip hop and r&b is glamorous i did expect there to be a classy sense about it and this is what i got when looking at the website. i think this is more what people would want to see rather than the HIP HOP magazine.
the website has colours of purple white blue and black, giving the website a fresh look about it.
the magazine is categorised better than the magazine, there is a proper layout which makes it easier to navigate your way around.
i think the website is aimed at teenagers from 13-14+ and i think that it would appeal to young adults.

Wednesday 4th February 2009

Today we had to play around with photoshop and start learning how to use it, we had to choose a picture from the ones we took last week and then produce a front cover for a nature magazine, using photoshop as you can see me and ash created a duck watch magazine, we decided to keep it as simple as possible and not to overcrowed the page, this is important so that people dont get put off by too much going on.
we edited the colour of the bush at the back to a purple colour to make it stand out more, we also managed to erase the bench in the top right hand corner, add a blizzard and as there was only one duck on its own in the blizzard we thought it would be a good idea to have the main story about the ducks being in danger because of the weather, we included a few snip-its of what was going to be inside, a title, full size image, bar code, price and the issue date so people can keep track of what isseus they have and the ones they have missed.

Homework - Researching a school magazine.

After looking through different magazines from different schools i decided to look at Weald Of Kent Grammer School. Here is the link to view the magazine;
its called

THE GRAPEVINE

http://www.wealdofkent.kent.sch.uk/LearningSystem/PortalHome/preDefault.asp?Resource=9A03D2EC-23F3-489F-A6FA-DA7449FE4EA9&ResourceID=7230

this magazine is well thought out and the layout is very neat, having the same theme of the vine on each page gives the magazine a flow.

the magazine has a variety of serious news and entertainment. theres advice on careers and gcse options.

there is infomation and reviews on previous trips, opinions and thoughts of pupils that went on these trips, giving advice to the year below, if they are thinking of going on the same trips.

there is a balance of images and writing, there is alot of colour giving me the impression this is aimed at younger pupils that sixth form, such as key stage 4.

there is infomation of shows that are coming up and that have past. there is a good educational value, such as book reviews.

there are gig and live entertainment and music reviews of outside of school, therefore there is a social aspect.

there are album reviews of recent albums that have been released to let people know of new things to try out.

there is even a guide about how to start eating healthy, and as people are trying to aim it at younget people so they dont get into bad eating habits this would be very interesting and useful.

i think there is a good use of colour and a balance of text and images, the content is very useful and entertaining to the pupils and i imagine proves very popular.

here is just an example of the colour and images used, attracting the target audience.

Monday 26th January 2009

Today we had to do a rough copy of what our groups student magazine would look like, we included a masthead of 'Taylor's Tribe', a medium close up shot of Mr. Taylor this was for our lead story of how Mr. Taylor the sixth form head of year raised funding for the redecoration of the sixth form block and common room. This story is relevant as our target audience will be to the sixth form students, we decided as a group that it will come out fortnightly and will be 80p each and will be on sale on the break time in the common room and corridor of the sixth form block.
We included a menu at the side and little snip its of larger stories inside the magazine, there is an advertisement for a 10% discount in a fashionable clothes shop, we thought that would be ideal for the age group.

i think it is very important to have a pitch and a mock-up, this is so that we get the practise and start to think of ideas for both our preliminary task and our music magazine, like things we would like to include and so on. i learned by the feedback at the end that publishing as often as we did would be good, but maybe a little more expensive, as it is for sixth formers. It is important that we took notice of what our class mates where saying as they are in the sixth form too and this would help us if our task we do is aimed at there age group it will be relevant and very useful.

Friday 23rd January 2009

Today in class, in our groups we had to present our pitch to the class, then answer any questions from either Mrs Howlett or other classmates.
I think our pitch did go quite well i think producing the magazine fortnightly was a good idea as we would have our own studying to do i think it would have been too much to be doing, also would be hard to find the information and entertainment to find.
i think we could of included in our pitch more detail of the content of the magazine.

Wednesday 23rd January 2009

Today in class we looked at a university newspaper produced for the students that go there, this was called the sheaf, the website was www.thesheaf.com
as you can see to the left i have inserted the homepage of The Sheaf, they have split there newspaper into information and section B is more for entertainment.

The newspaper is written and edited by the students that go to the university too, also the payment comes out of the students tuition therefore they don't have to pay for it when it is issued.

this was to give us an insight into what we could include in both our preliminary task and the main one.

i also realised that time is very important, and to make sure that i try and get some new information every time i do work so that it is not wasted.

We then had to get into groups and make a pitch for a students magazine/newspaper, this helped us think of things that our target audience would be interested in and what we would include.

we will be showing our pitch to the rest of the class on Friday 23rd Jan 09.
